Paris Walking Tour : Royal Palace and The Arcades
Will one ever think to find behind the classical façade of Palais-Royal a monumental complex of gardens and 18th century buildings?
Could one ever imagine to find at only 5 minutes away from the noisy avenue de l’Opéra a peaceful atmosphere, where silence is broken just by bird songs?
This former royal family’s résidence houses today state institutions as the Arts and Culture Ministry, the State Council and the famous national theater « La Comédie Française ».
The beautiful gardens enclosed by old fashion arcades, are opened to everyone.
After having crossed this estate of power and pleasure, we will proceed to the « covered passages », dating back to the early 19th century. They happened to be shelters from bad weather, offensive odor and noise.
Directly lighted by the glass roofs, they attracted numerous shops, cafés, entertainment places.
Most of them disappeared after Napoleon III asked to Baron Haussmann the tremendous city planning to provide spaces to stroll in the city and to open vast department stores.
But today we are fascinated by this part of Paris heritage : a pure magic décor made of calm and brightness.
And we enjoy to still find booksellers, collectors shops, etc…
